SRmoto Build #42
Our 6th Suzuki DR-Z400SM Build! This one is just a slight variation of our Project Bike Build #38, but we thought it deserved it’s own page on the blog. This particular bike is a 2016 model that we bought brand new. It originally came with all gunmetal grey plastics and gold rims, but it’s gone through quite a few changes over the few years we’ve had it in the shop. Currently the bike has the original black gas tank, and we’ve added various OEM and Acerbis plastics in all Black. We’re running the stock gold wheels with Contintal TKC80 tires, a Yoshimura RS-2 Carbon exhaust and a few other things. See below for a complete list of the parts and accessories we’ve installed. All parts listed will fit a 2000+ Suzuki DR-Z400S Dual Sport as well as a 2005+ Suzuki DR-Z400SM Supermoto…
WHEELS/TIRES:
We’re running Continental TKC80 tires on the bike, which are a 60% off-road and 40% on-road tire. The front tire is a size 120/70-17 and the rear is a 150/70-17. That rear tire is a bit taller than what we normally run on the bike (which would be a 150/60-17), but that’s the size Conti makes. This slightly taller rear tire does raise the seat height a bit (about 1/2″), and now the bike does lean over on the kickstand slightly more, otherwise the fit is fine. This wheel/tire setup would be ideal if you want to venture off-road with your DR-Z400SM, but still retain the 17″ wheel size for better handling in normal street riding. The TKC80’s will work well for mild off-road riding, and even though the tires have a somewhat aggressive knobby tread, they will still provide a decent amount of grip on pavement. And you can’t deny that they give the bike a very aggressive look you just don’t get from normal street tires.

• Continental TKC80 Rear Tire (150/70ZR-17)

ENGINE/PERFORMANCE:
Our favorite exhaust system for the DRZ400S and DRZ400SM is the Yoshimura RS-2. We’ve tried all the various exhaust systems for these bikes (FMF, MRD, Two Brothers) and we like the Yoshimura the best. We think it looks great (especially the carbon model) and we like the sound too. It’s not as loud as the MRD or Two Brothers, but it’s louder than the FMF Q4, and it has an excellent sound. It’s not the cheapest system out there, but well worth the money compared to the cheaper alternatives. It also gives you a nice bump in power/torque when combined with the JD Jetting Jet Kit, K&N Filter, and 3×4 airbox mod.

LIGHTING:
How do you instantly make your DRZ400 look better? Simple… get rid of the huge stock turn signals and enormous tail light assembly. We replaced ours with a trick 12oClockLabs Integrated Tail Light and Fender Eliminator kit, and their animated LED turn signals. What a difference these make in the overall look of the bike. We also replaced the stock headlight bulb with a super bright LED bulb from Cyclops.

• 12oClockLabs Programmable Animated LED Turn Signals (Front & Rear)
• DRC LED Flasher Holder Plates (mounted to stock front signal brackets)
• 12oclockLabs Fixed Rate Turn Signal Flasher
• Acerbis LED Vision Headlight
• Cyclops LED Headlight Bulb (also fits stock DRZ headlight)
HANDLEBARS/HANDGUARDS:
Handguards on a supermoto? I thought those were for off-road bikes? We put handguards on all of our supermotos. First off, I think they just look cool, but secondly they do block wind if you ride in colder weather, and they can protect the handlebars/controls if you ever drop the bike. The Zeta’s we use also offer optional integrated LED turn signals if you want to get rid of the stock front signals and have them integrated in the handguards. The stock clutch and brake levers are very basic, and non-adjustable. We replaced ours with Zeta Pivot levers, which come in anodized colors, are adjustable for reach, and are a nice 3 finger design.

COCKPIT:
The DRZ comes with very basic rider controls from the factory. This is where Suzuki saves money on the bike. We replaced the mirrors, footpegs, shift lever and brake pedal right away. Our Supermoto Mirrors look much better than the goofy looking stock mirrors, and provide excellent visibility mounted under the handlebars. The stock footpegs are very small and have rubber inserts, my guess is to help reduce vibration. We replaced those with the very popular DRC Motard Footpegs, which are wider and offer better traction and support. Finally we got rid of the cheap steel shift lever and brake pedal, and replaced them with folding levers/pedals from Zeta, both made from aluminum for added durability… plus they look much nicer in the red/black anodized colors.
