Looking for handguards for your KTM 690 SMC R or KTM 690 Enduro R? Here are some photos of the various Zeta handguards we've installed on our KTM 690 SMC R Project Bike.
These handguards should work well not only on the KTM 690 SMC R, but also the KTM 690 Enduro R, as well as the Husqvarna 701 dual sport and supermoto.
The photo above shows a couple different color combinations you can do with the Zeta PRO Armor handguards. On the left we've installed a set of the Zeta PRO's in Black Aluminum with the Zeta XC Protectors in Orange. On the right we've installed a set of the Zeta PRO's in Orange Aluminum with the Zeta XC Protectors in Black.

On the throttle side, you want to make sure the grip/throttle tube don't contact the edge of the handguard, which could cause the throttle to stick. On our 690 SMC R, the stock grip/throttle tube stick out about 1/4" past the end of the handlebar. Normally when installing handguards, we trim down the grip/throttle tube to be flush with the end of the handlebar, or even have a bit of the handlebar sticking out past them. We didn't want to cut the grip/throttle tube on our 690 though, so we installed the Zeta PRO's handlebar insert so that it was sticking out about 1/8" away from the grip and throttle tube, then tightened it up real good. This keeps the handguard away from the throttle and it can't get hung up on the handguard.
Our 690 SMC R came from the factory with cheap plastic handguards. Those handguards are made up of multiple pieces, including the two shown above that attach the handguards to the brake and clutch lever pivot bolts. These pieces stick out to the front and will get in the way of aftermarket handguards. You can either remove them entirely and source spacers and nuts for the brake/clutch pivot bolts, or you can retain them like we did and just trim them down. You'll notice in the photo above that we took a cutting wheel to them and trimmed off the front pieces so they don't stick out so far and get in the way of our Zeta handguards.
We used Zeta's U-Clamp Mount kit (1 1/8" size) to attach the Zeta PRO Armor Handguards to the handlebars. You'll notice in the photos above that they are installed upside down. We installed them both ways, and they actually clear the front brake line and clutch/throttle cable better when we installed them like this. On some bikes though, it may work better to install them the normal way.
A customer of ours sent us the photos shown above on the Zeta PRO Armor handguards installed on his KTM 690 SMC R. He's installed the Zeta PRO Armor handguards in Anodized Orange, with Black XC Protectors, and the BC Mount Type mounting kit, which attaches the in-board part of the handguard to the handlebar mount.
