The OEM Suzuki DRZ400 tail light and turn signal assembly (shown in pic below) is very large in size and makes the back end of the bike look horrible. Over the weekend we installed our DRZ400 DRC Edge2 Tail Light Kit with DRC Type 601 LED Flashers. Inside the Edge Tail Light we also installed a 12oClockLabs DRC Edge2 Processor Upgrade Board, which is a drop in replacement for the OEM LED board inside the Edge2 Tail Light. So that our LED flashers would blink at the same slow rate as the stock turn signals did, we also installed a 12oClockLabs Fixed Rate Turn Signal Flasher.
The before and after photos shown above give you an idea of how much better the DRC tail light and flashers look. Notice how nice and compact the final product is compared to the enormous stock rear tail light and turn signals.
This is the huge factory DRZ400 tail light/turn signal assembly that is removed from the bike...
Installation:
The Edge Tail Light kit and DRC LED Flashers come with instructions, and installation is pretty straightforward. Everything bolts right onto the sub-frame of the bike with no modifications to the frame required. This is what our tail light and LED flashers looked like after we'd wired them and prior to bolting it on to the bike (click photo below to enlarge). We used the optional OEM Connector Kit, which are the plugs you see on the ends of each set of wires below. Using these plugs allows you to just plug the whole setup directly into the plugs already on the bike...
The photo below shows our new wires plugged into the wires on the bike after we bolted the kit onto the sub-frame. NOTE: The blue and white wires in the photo below that are disconnected are the turn signal wires coming out of the 12oClockLabs Upgrade Board. We didn't use those since we are using the DRC Type 601 Flashers and not the integrated turn signals built into the 12oClockLabs board.
Overall Impressions:
The DRZ400 Edge2 Tail Light Kit w/ DRC Type 601 Flashers looks great and really cleans up the rear end of the bike. The standard Edge2 Tail Light LED's are pretty bright, but the 12oClockLabs DRC Edge2 Processor Upgrade Board we installed inside our tail light is even brighter, and it also provides safety brake pulsing every time the brakes are applied. Additionally, the upgraded LED board should last longer since it's designed with 500,000 life hour capacitors for exceptionally long life. Lastly, there is an integrated license plate light built into the bottom of the tail light to light up your plate.
Even though the DRC tail light and LED flashers are smaller than the factory tail light assembly, I think they are actually more visible from behind, especially with the 12oClockLabs Upgrade Board installed, since it's LED's are so bright. Also, when you hit your brakes, the tail light will automatically pulse a few times to warn drivers behind you. Overall this is one of the best mods you can do to your DRZ400... not only does it look great, but the bright LED Tail Light and LED Flashers help make you more visible on the road or trail.
