One of the better ADV motorcyle channels on YouTube is MADTV out of Australia. They focus mostly on adventure bike comparisons and reviews, but dabble in some of the smaller dual sport bikes as well. Recently they've been testing the Australian version of the Honda CRF450RL, and did a good comparison video of a stock CRF450RL and a modified CRF450RL that has a Vortex ECU installed. They also do some comparisons between the CRF450RL and their Honda CRF300L Rally project bike.
If you ride off-road, one of the best upgrades for your bike is a steering stabilizer. Listed below are some of the key benefits for those not familiar with these products...

Key Benefits of a Steering Stabilizer:

1. Reduces rider fatigue and arm pump... instead of your arms being the steering stabilizer, the adjustable Stabilizer Unit helps control side to side movements of the handlebars, even at slower speeds through rough terrain

2. Eliminates that sudden "thrust-effect” of having the handlebars pulled from your hands after unknowingly hitting something unforeseen like rocks, tree roots, rain ruts or potholes.

3. Helps control the natural tendency of the “left to right” front end movements known as “head shake”

4. By helping stabilize the front end of your motorcycle, the rear of the motorcycle will track straighter allowing the rest of your suspension to work the way it was designed to.

5. Helps keep your motorcycle going straight in loose loamy / sandy sections, reduces head shake approaching turns, and smooths out those rough sections by preventing handlebar wrenching jolts.

For the 2019-2020 Honda CRF450L and 2021+ CRF450RL we use a Scotts Steering Stabilizer with their Sub Mount kit on our CRF450RL project bikes, and that's the one we offer in our on-line store (see link below). These kits include everything you need to install the mounting kit, handlebar mounts/risers, and the stabilizer unit. We even have one installed on our CRF450RL supermoto project bike because I like that extra piece-of-mind that the stabilizer will help eliminate potential head shake at speed, and even possibly eliminate issues from things like potholes, which we have a lot of here in Ohio.

We're big fans of RevZilla's YouTube channel and their Daily Rider series where Zack Courts test rides various bikes throughout the year and tries to rank each of them. It's not an exact science, and his reviews are only done on one test ride, but he's an experienced rider who's ridden many bikes, and seems to have pretty good overall way of evaluating them. Towards the end of 2023, Zack test rode the 2024 Honda Transalp and came away very impressed with the bike, so much so that he put it at the very top of their Daily Rider Leaderboard for 2023, and that's where it finished the year... at the very top of the list. He even admits in his latest video that the bike really surprised him and he wasn't expecting it to be so good.

The 2019+ Honda CRF450RL / CRF450L basically comes from the factory with the same seat as the CRF motocross bikes, so it's meant for 30 minute motos and not long dual sport or adventure rides. One of the best upgrades you can do to these bikes is a more comfortable seat, and Seat Concepts has your answer with their Comfort XL seat.

For our CRF450RL project bike, we tried both the standard Comfort seat as well as the slightly wider Comfort XL seat, and ended up preferring the wider XL seat... it's just a bit more comfortable, but still not so wide that it keeps you from moving around on the seat. For the cover material, I preferred the the Black Semi Grip (low slip) Top and Red Semi-Grip Sides for the riding I do, but the Black Gripper Top seats have proven slightly more popular overall with our customers. The Comfort XL seat is about 9" wide at its widest point, compared to about 5" for the stock seat. The seat tapers and gets narrower as it gets closer to tank, so it still allows you to easily move around on the bike. The combination of a wider seating surface, and proprietary foam material, make it much more comfortable than the stock seat, especially on longer rides. I've done several 250+ mile days on Seat Concepts seats and they are a HUGE improvement over pretty much any stock seat.

Cover Material Options:
The CRF450L/RL seats are available in several combinations of materials/color. The covers with the Gripper Top are best for aggressive riding if you really want to be held in place. The covers with the Semi-Grip (Low-Slip) top are slightly less grippy than the Gripper top, but still will hold you in place.

Installation:
This is a complete and direct bolt-on seat for the bike. You simply take your stock seat off, and put the SC seat in its place, re-using the two stock bolts as mounting hardware. Its literally a 30-60 second install.

Final Verdict:
Overall I think this is one of the best upgrades you can do for the 2019+ Honda CRF450L / CRF450RL. The stock motocross-syle seat is very narrow and quite un-comfortable. The Seat Concepts Comfort XL seat on the other hand, is wider, and much more comfortable, so you basically forget about the seat and can focus more on your riding. I think the Semi-Grip (Low Slip) Top is probably the best choice for most dual sport/supermoto riders, but if you really like to be held in place, the Gripper Top is the way to go. These seats also look great in the Black/Red color combination.

Ducati just announced their brand new 2024 Ducati Hypermotard 698, and we're seriously considering ordering one. From what I've been reading, they're due in US dealers sometime around February 2024. We currently have a 2021 KTM 690 SMCR Project Bike in the shop, and have really enjoyed modding and riding that bike over the last 2 years. This new Ducati seems to be a very very similar bike to the KTM 690 (and Husqvarna 701 SM and Gas Gas SM700), atleast on paper. We had been contemplating the addition of a Ducati Hypermotard 950 to our project bike lineup, but this smaller 698 has me leaning more in that direction.

I put together a real quick comparison spreadsheet (see below) and also some photos of our KTM 690 SMCR and the new Duc, to show how very similar the new Ducati even looks to the KTM. The Austrians might finally have a little competition in this middleweight supermoto segment, and hopefully we will get ahold of a Hyper 698, do some modifications to it, and be able to compare it to our highly modified KTM to see how they stack up.

Pricing on the two bikes is nearly the same unless you go for the Hyper 698 RVE Model. Ducati offers an RVE model in the Hyper 950 as well, but it seems very difficult to find and must be produced in limited numbers. Not sure if that will be the case for this 698 RVE. And the million dollar question is whether this 698 will ever have an SP model, or if Ducati will leave that to its 950 big brother. Here is pricing...
• 2024 Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono: $12,995
• 2024 Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono RVE: $14,495
• 2024 KTM 690 SMC R: $12,999

The Suzuki DRZ400SM supermoto and DRZ400S dual sport are back for 2024, and look to be mostly un-changed from the 2023 models, except for colors and graphics. These are great bikes, that have been around forever, but still have a loyal following. We have two DRZ400SM project bikes, and even with all the shiny new bikes on the market, the DRZ's are still one of our favorites. One of our customers sent us some photos and details on his Honda CRF300L dual sport. Here's what Jeff has to say about his CRF300L...

The bike is a 2021 Honda CRF300L. I purchased the Akrapovic full exhaust system from you, as well as the JD Jetting EFI controller to provide added fuel. I modified the air box for increased flow. Tires are a Dunlop D606 (120/90-18) on the rear and a Pirelli MT 21 (90/90-21) on the front. I added a 45T alloy sprocket on the rear drive and had to replace the chain with a 112 links. The rear suspension was replaced with your Race Tech Suspension Package, which consists of a new rear shock and a front fork spring kit with Gold Valves. The bike is used mainly for dirt riding, single track and fast fire roads.

Even if you order the correct 520 size, many X-Ring chains will be a bit too wide and can rub on the engine case behind the front sprocket. We contacted D.I.D about this, and they recommended their 520 ERVT Racing Chain. These chains are slightly narrower than comparable X-Ring chains, and feature their low-friction D.I.D X-Ring for greater performance and longer wear. We use these chains on several of our project bikes, in addition to our two CRF450RL's.

Rear Sprocket:
For a rear sprocket, we're big fans of the Supersprox Stealth line of sprockets. The design and construction of these sprockets give you longer sprocket/chain life, without compromising weight. An all aluminum center section of the sprocket is 70% lighter than steel, while the outer part of the sprocket is made of steel and the teeth will last 4 times longer than aluminum. The Red anodized aluminum center with black steel outer section looks very trick on the CRF models!

Front Sprocket:
Finally, for a front sprocket we like the ones from Renthal. Their front sprockets are precision CNC-machined to extremely tight tolerances to give the ultimate combination of strength, light weight and durability.

You can check out our Honda CRF450RL Project Bike, and see all the mods we've done to it, at the link below. To improve performance and overall ride-ability, we've done a Vortex ECU, aftermarket exhaust, Twin Air Filter kit and flywheel weight. My guess is we're right about 45-46 horsepower, but more importantly the bike now runs great compared to stock... no more stumbling and stalling, or snatchy on/off throttle. It's must easier and more enjoyable to ride!
